Shoguns in for Hanley replacement

Bristol Shoguns are closing in on a replacement defensive coach for Ellery Hanley who left the club last season.

The Zurich Premiership side is hoping James Grant, formerly of Super 12 champs ACT Brumbies, will accept an offer to join the coaching staff.

Former League legend and St Helens coach Hanley left the west country outfit last season to take up a full time position with the RFU after impressing as a consultant to the England side.

Meanwhile the Shoguns are gearing up for this weekend's friendly with Newport with fly half Shane Drahm, an closed season recruit from the Queensland Reds, hoping to secure a regular slot in the starting 15.

Incumbent number 10, Argentinean playmaker Felipe Contepomi, has not resumed training as yet so Drahm, who benefits from EU qualification and therefore does not figure on the overseas quota, has a free run.

"It will mean a lot to play at the Memorial Stadium. We only get these kind of grounds at Super 12 level and not at club level. And making my debut at home is something I'm really looking forward to," Drahm told the Bristol Evening Post.

Newport have been hit by injuries in pre-season with Ian Gough, Matt Mostyn, Jason Jones-Hughes and Alix Popham, who was burned himself in an domestic accident, all out.
