Dawson has knee surgery
August 15, 2001

The second Lions' bad boy Matt Dawson could join Austin Healey on the sidelines for the start of the Zurich Premiership.

The Northampton and England scrum half has had exploratory knee surgery and is hoping to be fully fit in time for the Saints' season opener against Gloucester on September 1.

He discovered the problem on returning from Australia with the Lions - a tour on which both he, and Leicester utility back Healey, were outspoken critics.

Last night, in his absence, Dawson's club beat Glasgow 35-15 in the latest game of their pre-season tour to Scotland. The Zurich Premiership side scored five tries through John Leslie, Andrew Blowers, Steve Thompson, Nick Beal and Mark Tucker.

The hosts fought back as both Olivier Brouzet and Budge Poutney were sin binned, Rory Kerr grabbing a brace before Beal wrapped things up.
