Pumas put ton past Eagles
August 19, 2001

The Pumas sounded a warning to the bigger unions with a resounding 111-14 victory over the Eagles in a Bankfin Currie Cup encounter played in Witbank on Saturday. The half-time score was 73-0.

The Pumas turned up the heat from the onset and ran with purpose, finding the gap time and again off good angles. They scored 16 tries in all, while the Eagles managed to cross the hosts' line twice.

Centre Franco Smith was the pick of the Puma backline players, while in the pack flanker Henry Rheeders excelled.

Pumas CEO Chris Buitenbach was in raptures over his team's performance and said that if they continued in this vein they would pose a threat this Currie Cup campaign."This was the best game I've seen in my whole life," he said.

"The guys just clicked today, everything went right. We've got nine former Bulls players who played in the Currie Cup final three years ago and that experience has helped us," he added.

Wing Jacques Julies scored a hat-trick of tries, while four players - Marius Goosen, Marius Schoeman, Torries Pretorius and Hakkies Swart - each scored a brace. Other try scorers were Denzil Manuel, Paul Hoffman, Smith, Pierre Uys and Kat de Jager. Pumas flyhalf Nel Fourie landed 31 points via 14 conversions and a penalty.

For the Eagles Joggie Viljoen and Nico Breedt scored while flyhalf Graham Hennesey slotted two conversions.
