End of the road for Kavaliers
August 19, 2001

From a Natal Sharks point of view it was mission accomplished at the Absa Stadium in Durban on Saturday, securing a bonus point for four tries as they beat the Boland Kavaliers 37-20 in a match in which the Wine "Farmers" deserved better rewards for their efforts.

The Sharks won by four tries and three penalty goals to two goals and two penalties, but it was not their best performance enroute to a Top Eight spot. If anything the Kavaliers were the dominant side, but the Sharks made the most of their chances.

Opportunistic play by the hosts resulted in two of their tries, the first to No 8 Shaun Sowerby and then flyhalf Herkie Kruger launched a clever crosskick into the arms of Stefan Terblanche for the fourth. Kruger also played a kicking role with four conversions and three penalty goals out of four attempts.

The Boland forwards kept the Sharks on the defensive for most of the first half and they backed this with a foray of sparkling runs and inter-passing between the backs that got them tries to flanker Jannie Coetzee and substitute centre Jan Ackerman and 10 points from the boot of fullback Leon van Dyk.

This match all but ends the Kavaliers' Currie Cup hopes this season, but at least they bow out with pride after good performances against both giants, the Lions and Sharks.
