Edinburgh see off Connacht
August 25, 2001

Edinburgh recovered from a nightmare start to sweep aside the challenge of Celtic League shock troops Connacht 30-21 at Galway.

The Gunners looked destined to suffer another night of gloom as the Irishmen, inspired by their stunning victory over Cardiff, raced into a 13-0 lead.

But a burst of three tries in the middle portion of the second half from Calvin Howarth, Graham Dall and Derrick Lee turned the tide in favour of the Gunners.

Edinburgh had paid the price for their lack of sharpness by surrendering the lead to a penalty by Eric Elwood, who also converted Pat Duignan's try.

Elwood added another kick before the break - and then came the great Edinburgh fightback.

Gordon Ross broke their duck with two penalties before the decisive try-volley.

Between the second and third scores, Elwood had landed his third penalty, but Duncan Hodge replied in identical style to clinch the glory for his side.

The Irishmen had the last word when number eight Des Dillon barged through for their second try.
