Canada stand by their commitments
August 28, 2001

Canada will fulfil it's autumn international schedule despite the threat of a players' strike over its decision to dismiss coach Dave Clark.

Senior stars such as Al Charron and Morgan Williams have threatened never to play for their country again after Clark was ditched following a string of poor results, including two home defeats to England in June.

It had led to fears that Canada would have to scrap its autumn programme, which includes encounters with Australia, Scotland and Ireland.

``The CRU is standing firm on its recent decision to terminate the contract of former National Coach David Clark, despite pressure from some players who have been threatening to boycott the games,'' said an official Canadian Rugby statement this afternoon.

``Canada's players are not yet paid for representing their country, and are not contracted to the Union. They are entirely free to decide whether to accept the honour and privilege of representing their country.''

``The autumn games represent a rare opportunity for Canadian players to test themselves against teams much higher in the world rankings.''
