Kiwi banned for life
August 31, 2001

A rugby player has been banned from the sport for life for attacking a referee during a recent premier club match, league officials said Friday.

The ban was imposed on Western senior player Joseph Tau by the Mangonui Rugby Judiciary on Wednesday after referee Marty Robinson was knocked to the ground with a punch in a game against Awanui last weekend.

The incident led to Robinson calling the remainder of the game off. Saturday's game had been Tau's first after an eight-week suspension for headbutting an opponent during a match against Takahue.

He had also earlier in the season been suspended for verbally abusing referees. - Sapa-AFP
