Van der Merwe joins Wellington
August 31, 2001

Western Province prop Morné Van Der Merwe left for Wellington on Friday where he will again play for the New Zealand based side on loan for the remainder of the season.

There is, however, a clause in the agreement that should WP require his services during the Bankfin Currie Cup, he will be immediately released and return.

"Morné goes with our blessing," coach Gert Smal said. "He will once again play tighthead, having served in that position during Wellington's 2000 winning season.

"Being a loosehead prop, the exposure and game time he will get playing against quality international and Super 12 players, will make him all the more versatile and useful to WP and SA as a player in the future."

WP currently have the services of five props - Robbie Kempson, Cobus Visagie, Faan Rautenbach, Toks van der Linde and Eddie Andrews.
