Marais wanted to join Solomons

Western Province hooker Charl Marais, who will join Sale Sharks at the end of the season, admitted on Tuesday that he would have preferred to join mentor Alan Solomons at Ulster instead.

Marais announced on Monday that he was leaving South Africa, citing the end of his Springbok career and a better financial reward when probed on the reason why.

However, if the opportunity ever arose, he would love to join his former Western Province and Stormers coach in Ireland. "I owe a lot to Solly," he told News 24. "He played an important part in my rugby career and I will always be grateful to him.

"I was made an offer by Ulster earlier this year but couldn't take it because Province wouldn't release me from my contract. Although I will be playing for Sale, I told Solly if he should ever need me he should just call and I would make a plan."
