Krige wants Bok jersey back
September 6, 2001

Western Province flanker Corne Krige believes he still has a role to play for the Springboks and plans to use the remainder of the Currie Cup competition to remind coach Harry Viljoen of his worth.

The hardman of SA rugby was a regular fixture in the Bok squad before injury forced him out of the Tri-Nations Test against New Zealand in Cape Town in July.

Axed captain Andre Vos replaced him on the side of the scrum for that game, and subsequently made the position his own with some sparkling performances against the All Blacks and Wallabies.

However, Krige doesn't believe it is the end of his international career, despite Vos's great form and the emergence of young Lions and SA under-21 star Johann van Niekerk.

"A lot of people are saying I am supposedly out of favour," he told the Cape Times. "I don't think that is the case. I had an injury and Vossie used his chance well."

He admits he will have to work hard to regain his place in the side, but says the run-in to the Currie Cup finals will give him the perfect opportunity to showcase his talents.

"Yes, it is a difficult situation for me, but I have been in more difficult positions where I've only had three games to prove myself before the end-of-season tour and I made it. I have a very specific way of playing and I must ensure I do it so well so that they want a fetcher in the team.

His fight to get back his Bok jersey starts on Friday when his Western Province side takes on the Border Bulldogs in East London.
