Foley in retirement rethink
September 6, 2001

Queensland coach Mark McBain doubts hooker Michael Foley's chances of playing for the Reds again despite a possible change of mind by the player himself.

With Brumbies hooker Jeremy Paul unavailable until next year due to injury, Foley is expected to be selected for the Wallabies' end-of-season tour of Canada and Europe. The games on this tour were thought to be the 34-year-old's last before retiring, but some excellent recent form has Foley wondering if he should play on.

Foley played his 46th Test in last Saturday's clash against the All Blacks at Stadium Australia and was one of the Wallabies' best.

However, there seems to be some confusion over a conversation Foley had with McBain earlier this year and no contract offer for next year has been offered.

"I had a meeting with Mark McBain earlier in the year and made a strong overture to him that I would be interested in being the assistant coach in the future," Foley told AAP. "But I also said I hoped I would play a good enough season this year that at the end of the season he would say to me, `You've played that well we're interested in re-signing you'".

"That hasn't happened so maybe he thinks I haven't played well enough this year."

McBain's memory of the conversation are different.

"That was never said, it was a conversation between he and I. If he's changed his mind he should be speaking to me and not trying to whip up something," McBain said. "After the Lions game (against Queensland) we had a drink in the dressing room and that was the way it was left - that it was going to be his last year.

"It's a little bit embarrassing because we've gone ahead and signed three hookers and for us to go ahead and try and do something with him - we just don't have the money to do anything.

"The other part of a conversation we had was how he didn't want to go out just hanging on or looking over his shoulder, he wanted to finish playing well. I'll think you'll find he's had a pretty good season so maybe something's come out of it."

Meanwhile McBain had no plans to use rugby league recruit Wendell Sailor before Super 12 trials in February next year. McBain said what Sailor needed most was a rest, dismissing the possibility of using the winger in the one-off interstate match against New South Wales on October 6 or having him find his feet by playing some club rugby in Europe.
