Bulls select Joost at No.9
September 13, 2001

After a drama-filled couple of weeks Springbok scrumhalf Joost van der Westhuizen can concentrate on what he does best again: helping the Blue Bulls to win games.

The most-capped Test Springbok on Thursday has been included in the Blue Bulls side for Saturday's Bankfin Currie Cup game against Fedsure Western Province at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria.

His inclusion in place of the unfortunate Coenraad Groenewald is one of two changes coach Heyneke Meyer made to the side that annihilated Griquas on Sunday. Chris le Roux is also back after an injury and the captain will be taking over from Danie Rossouw at No 8.

Groenewald was one of the stars in last Sunday's rout of Griquas and is desperately unlucky to lose out to Van der Westhuizen. The Springboks' match-winning abilities and experience, however, are going to be sorely needed against a star-studded Western Province outfit.

Blue Bulls technical adviser John McFarland on Thursday said Van der Westhuizen slotted in nicely into the Bulls pattern. "He slotted in well and he is up to speed with what's going on. Joost will be a big factor for us," said McFarland.

There still is concern over the groin injury flyhalf Jaco van der Westhuyzen sustained at training on Wednesday evening. "The doctor is confident that Jaco will be ready to play," said an optimistic McFarland. Boeta Wessels is ready to slot in at pivot in case of the worst case scenario, with Tiaan Joubert as centre cover.

Blue Bulls: Hannes Venter, McNeil Hendricks, Frikkie Welsh, Boeta Wessels, Gavin Passens, Jaco van der Westhuyzen, Joost van der Westhuizen, Chris le Roux (capt), Anton Leonard, Piet Joubert, Victor Matfield, Bakkies Botha, Piet Boer, Danie Coetzee, Wessel Roux. Substitutes: Jannie Brooks, Sias Wagner, Matt Frank, Danie Rossouw, Coenraad Groenewald, Tiaan Joubert, Ryno Hendricks.
