Davies rings the changes for Saints clash
September 15, 2001

Phil Davies believes that Leeds can draw inspiration from Sunday's Premiership opponents Northampton.

Leeds are back on home soil following the euphoria of their stunning opening weekend victory over six-times English champions Bath.

Since recording that 10-6 success, the Tykes crashed 42-14 against London Irish, giving them a firm reality check about how tough life can be in English rugby's leading domestic competition.

Coach Davies believes that tomorrow's clash heralds the start of bread and butter business for Leeds after the hype surrounding their Premiership arrival, and he is impressed by what Saints, Heineken Cup winners last year, have achieved.

"Northampton are a fantastic example of how a club can establish themselves in the top division," he said.

"Having been promoted during the 1990s they have developed into a world-class side, and we can draw a lot of inspiration from their success."

It is a much-changed Leeds side that Davies sends into battle, with fly-half Stephen Bachop being the most notable absentee.

Bachop suffered a calf strain during the Irish defeat, so Jon Benson switches from full-back to deputise and Dan Scarborough wears the number 15 jersey. Elsewhere, lock Phil Murphy and number eight Carl Hogg are handed first Premiership starts.

Saints boss John Steele will select from a 24-man squad but the only probable change after last Saturday's 26-7 success against Bath involves fit-again flanker Andrew Blowers replacing Andy Rennick.

England hooker Phil Greening, who "is busting to play," according to Wasps rugby director Nigel Melville, sits out tomorrow's Loftus Road appointment with his former club and current league leaders Sale.

But Greening, who has almost recovered from the knee injury that cruelly wrecked his Lions chances in Australia, could feature in the near future to give Melville some welcome good news amid a succession of injury setbacks.

Elsewhere on Sunday, second-placed London Irish travel to Bristol, where victory for the Exiles would take them top if Wasps beat Sale, and Newcastle host Harlequins.
