Griquas fight back to down Eagles
September 15, 2001

Griquas came back strongly to beat the Eagles 44-21 in their Section Y Bankfin Currie Cup encounter at Kimberley on Saturday.

Trailing 7-0 after two minutes, the Eagles, withstanding considerable pressure on their line, struck back in a productive 17-minute spell with three converted tries.

Griquas slashed the Eagles lead to seven shortly before the break, and a further two converted tries inside the first three minutes of the second half put the home side well on their way to adding 30 points to their tally without reply in the final 40 minutes.

The Eagles, after showing some good attacking patches in the first half, conceded too many penalties during the match and as Griquas lifted their game, the visitors' handling let them down in the second half.

For the visitors No 8 Nico Breedt was the pick of their pack, while scrumhalf Noel Oelschig and right wing Jeremy Plaatjies impressed in the backline.

Griquas No 8 and Man of the Match Attie Stander and lock Nelis Swart stood out for the home side.
