Roff off to a winning start
September 16, 2001

Biarritz handed French champions Toulouse their second successive defeat on Saturday, though their hero in the 30-24 triumph wasn't debut-making Australian star winger Joe Roff, but English kicker Stuart Legg.

Legg, who also kicked Biarritz to their opening 22-6 win over Stade Francis last weekend, was in impeccable form, slotting over 20 of his side's points while his opposing number Frederic Michalak scored 14.

Both sides scored two tries apiece but Toulouse, who lost away at Beziers last Saturday, were unable to press home a one-man advantage on two occasions.

French international back row forward Serge Betsen was sin-binned just before halftime and then Christophe Milheres followed him to the dug out for an infringement.

Toulouse, who hold 17 titles to their opponents' two, had started the brightest and were rewarded when Xavier Garbajosa (pictured) touched down for the first try of the match after being released by Cedric Desbrosse.

However Biarritz, who last won the French crown in 1939, went ahead in the 15th minute as hooker Noel Curnier crossed to score which Legg converted to put them 10-8 up.

Toulouse' porous defence was breached again five minutes later when centre John Isaac crashed over from Milheres pass.

The champions made it to the break just 18-14 down, but ended it on another low note when centre Clement Poitrenaud suffered an arm injury and was unable to return after being hurled into the advertising hoardings by Betsen.

Toulouse went back into the lead when they were awarded a penalty try eight minutes into the second-half which Michalak converted, and then went 24-18 ahead when their admirable kicker
kicked a penalty in the 56th minute.

However, it was to prove a false dawn as Legg converted four unanswered penalties in the final 20 minutes to seal a victory that confirmed Biarritz as genuine championship contenders and left Toulouse bewildered at their dreadful start to the defence of the crown. - Sapa
