Parma go top
September 16, 2001

Star studded Parma moved to the top of the league in the Italian Super 10 with victory in their latest clash.

Star studded Parma, the club which during the summer signed no less than fifteen new players, including Bath former internationals Steve Ojomoh and Adebajo Adebajo, stands top of the table in the Italian Super Ten after Day Two of the newly structured tournament.

Parma beat, 35-21, Bologna away, and won the bonus point for scoring five tries, leaving them with ten points in the ranking.

South African number ten Christian De Marigny was the man of the match with a final tally of a try, two conversions and two penalties for the winners, while winger Giovanni Branchi touched down twice for Parma, both tries in the second half.

Defending champions Benetton Treviso produced the other away win of the day. Benetton, who had lost to Viadana on the opening day of the season, beat L'Aquila, 23-17, after dominating with the pack, but failing to turn their advantage into points.

L'Aquila opened the scoring with a try by flanker Edoardo Vaggi on the 7th minute of the game, to which fly half German Cagnolo added four penalties, three in the second half. Treviso replied with a touch down by Tonga back row forward David Edwards and 18 points by Simon Mason, all with the boot. Treviso put four points on the table, but they looked far from championship winning form.

In the other games of Day Two, Calvisano lost 29-28 against Rovigo, in what was for the most part a kicking contest between Andrea Scanavacca and Kelly Rolleston, Viadana beat Rome 26-8 and Petrarca Padova and Gran drew, 15-15.
