September 17, 2001

The Australian Rugby Union board has officially endorsed former ACT Brumbies manager Phil Thomson as the new manger of the Vodafone Wallabies.

The ARU's official website announced that Thomson takes over from outgoing manager John McKay next month when Australia tours Canada (TBC) and Europe.

"John is highly respected for his work as Australian manager and over the next few weeks I'll be working closely with him to ensure a smooth transition," said Thomson.

Thomson, a former Detective with the Australian Federal Police, brings a wealth of managerial experience to the Vodafone Wallabies.

From 1993 to 1995 he was manager of the ACT under 21's before helping start up the ACT Brumbies with Rod Macqueen in 1996 where he remained until the end of this year's Vodafone Super 12 series.

"I actually took leave without pay in '96 to manage the Brumbies in their first season and once a full-time position became available I resigned from the AFP."
