SRU set Canada a deadline
September 21, 2001

The Scottish Rugby Union have given Canada until the end of next week to finalise their plans for the proposed international at Murrayfield on November 18.

The Canadian game is in disarray following the dismissal of coach Dave Clark during the summer. A number of leading players - including captain Al Charron and star scrum-half Morgan Williams - are threatening strike action unless Clark is reinstated.

The CRFU have refused to cave in, even though their stance has almost certainly cost them a visit by Australia this autumn because the world champions do not believe a weakened Canadian side can give them a stern enough test.

It is thought Scottish officials have already sounded out Argentina over their availability should Canada fail to give adequate assurances over their visit, and coach Ian McGeechan admitted a deadline has been set.

"We have made our position very clear," he said.

"They have 10 days to let us know what they are doing, and we will make a decision once we have the response."
