Kingston relieved after first victory

Harlequins' new director of rugby John Kingston admitted that he breathed a sigh of relief after he saw his south London side record their first Zurich Premiership win of the season this afternoon with a 33-13 triumph over Wasps.

Kingston, who joined Quins from Irish side Galwegians this summer, was under pressure to pull out the right result at The Stoop after a dismal start to the season which had seen Quins concede defeat to London Irish and Bristol and only managed to muster a six all draw against Newcastle a week ago.

There was also the added factor that this match was a fiercely-competitive London derby.

"I'm very relieved," said Kingston, whose side now head into next week's Heineken Cup on a winning note. "Today we weren't a mess. We proved that we knew exactly what we were doing.

"We have been working very hard this week. You can talk to the players and convince them about many things, but ultimately they have to perform for that to come to fruition and that is what they have done today.

"I am very pleased because we really got things going and built on the platform we built last week against Newcastle. Then we did certain things very well and we did them again today.

"Our defence was also really good compared to two weeks ago against Bristol.

"Then I was horrified and terrified about what I had seen because we defended like schoolchildren and if you are going to do that then you are going to get nowhere.

"But today was a different case altogether and I am very satisfied."

Meanwhile, Nigel Melville's Wasps not only slumped to their third defeat in four games but saw their injury list continue to grow.

England player Joe Worsley was forced to leave the field in the second half after he was the unfortunate victim of a boot in a ruck that ripped his scrotum.

Worsley was immediately taken to a private hospital in Slough to repair the damage to one of his testicles. Wasps now have nine players sidelined through injury although Melville is hoping Kenny Logan and Alex King will be back in action next week.
