Ryan concerned by second half mistakes
September 23, 2001

Bristol coach Dean Ryan admitted he was concerned by his side's second-half collapse against Leeds which almost saw victory snatched from them.

Leeds scored three tries after the home side looked to be cruising to their second Premiership victory of the season with a 28-10 half-time lead, helped by the Leeds number eight Isaac Feaunati spending time in the sin bin.

"I'm very disappointed to concede the points having given ourselves a 25-point platform at one stage. But we just don't seem able to string two halves together," said Ryan.

"I thought during the first half we played some of best rugby of the season. We played with pace and accuracy which I don't think anyone can live with.

"But we just froze in the second half and we seem reluctant to take the next step.

"You can guarantee that a side like Leeds are going to scrap for 80 minutes. We made silly mistakes and gave them food to feed on and they punished us for it.

"For some reason I have to spend every last five minutes of a game wondering whether we are going to win or not.

"It's frustrating but I think we have done enough beating ourselves up at the moment."

Second-half tries from flanker Cameron Mather, full-back Jon Benson and replacement wing Dan Scarborough added to one late in the first half from lock Chris Murphy earned Leeds a trying-scoring bonus point.

"Six points from our last four games hopefully shows that we are not going to be a pushover in the Premiership and we have something to offer," said Leeds coach Phil Davies.

"Getting that try through Murphy just before the break gave us some light at the end of the tunnel. We came out in the second half and played with commitment and determination.

"We put some good play together to get four tries which all resulted from good ball retention and continuity of play because it's not easy to come to Bristol and score four tries.

"But the second sin-binning of the season for Isaac Feaunati is not good. We are expecting better things from this very experienced player. I will be having a private word with him."
