Bulls target sensational Botha
September 26, 2001

The Blue Bulls, in their quest to build a super team for next year's Currie Cup campaign, have offered Falcons centre sensation Ettienne Botha a contract.

The Bulls have recently incurred the wrath of Free State Cheetahs coach Peet Kleynhans when they lured talented wing Wylie Human to Pretoria with an enormous offer. Now Falcons coach Phil Pretorius is seeing red about the Bulls' offer to a player who took the South African scene by storm this season.

"I don't know what to say man, it doesn't make sense. We small unions will continue to develop young players and the bigger unions can continue to ride on our backs," Pretorius said on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old Botha (pictured) has been a revelation in the Falcons midfield this year and together with Adrian Jacobs forms a formidable combination. Botha has scored 10 Currie Cup tries this season and on Sunday destroyed the Pumas with his piercing runs, in the process scoring two tries.

He is now a real contender for a place in the South African 'A' side and if national coach Harry Viljoen wants to be bold even for Springbok honours.

Blue Bulls Company chief executive Stephan Pretorius on Monday confirmed the offer. He also stated he is aware of an agreement between the four unions in the Bulls Super 12 region that they would not poach each other's players.

According to Pretorius Botha already had an offer from a union outside the region and therefore the Bulls are within their rights to negotiate with the player.

Pretorius scathingly remarked that agreements are there to be broken. "These things will always happen, but funnily enough the Blue Bulls haven't produced a new Springbok since 1998, while we've produced four. They have 500 per cent more money, al the manpower and facilities, but all they can do is buy and buy."

Pretorius said if Botha decides to leave, he wouldn't stand in his way. "If he decides to leave, we will just make a new centre." The coach added that people are giving the centres a lot of the credit for the Falcons' impressive run this season, but says it is a team effort.

"Look, they are playing well, but every guy in this side does his bit. Deon de Kock is a good scrumhalf and Joe Esterhuizen is playing well at flyhalf, so our opponents have to watch them and that creates opportunities for the centres. And if they watch the centres our wings get a chance to test the defence.

"We also have a good scrum and a good lineout, a brilliant loose-trio and the guys are very happy. So it is definitely not a one-man show."
