Shocks in Bok training squad
October 6, 2001

Louis Koen and Pieter Rossouw are the two surprise inclusions in the 35-man Springbok squad selected for a one-day training session in Durban in a fortnight's time.

The session, to be held the day after the Western Province vs Natal Top Eight clash at the Absa Stadium, will give national coach Harry Viljoen the opportunity to get together with his players and build some continuity before the end-of-year tour to Europe and the United States.

Sources close to the Bok camp have confirmed that Lions' pivot Koen is one of two flyhalves selected - the other being Braam van Straaten - as incumbent No 10 Butch James will miss the tour following his six-week suspension and knee operation.

The robust Natalian was suspended for his off-the-ball antics in the clash against the Free State Cheetahs, and decided to undergo the knee operation which will rule him out for the remainder of the year.

Winger Pieter Rossouw is also back in the fray after some inspirational performances for Western Province this season. Viljoen may have opted for the lanky speedster following the Boks' inability to create any tries from the back.

It will be his first involvement with the national squad since injuring his hamstring on last year's end-of-season tour to Argentina and the United Kingdom, although he is perhaps lucky to get the nod ahead of in-form Cheetahs star Wylie Human.

The coach has also included four extra centres to cure the backline woes. Sharks ace Trevor Halstead finally gets a look-in after narrowly missing out on the Tri-Nations squad, while Falcons sensation Adrian Jacobs gets a second chance after injuring his groin ahead of the Durban Test against France earlier this year.

The Boland Kavaliers midfield partnership of Marius Joubert and Wayne Julies will also get a chance to strut their stuff together, with the latter having only just returned after hurting his knee in his debut Test against the All Blacks at Newlands.

"Crowd-favourite" Percy Montgomery was also invited, despite some shaky performances this season, while AJ Venter's superb form for the Natal Sharks earned him a spot.

Bulls' Super 12 star Friedrich Lombard will also be at the Durban session as will WP strongman Toks van der Linde, but local Craig Davidson is still out in the cold.
