Lions still on track
October 6, 2001

The Lions moved confidently towards a place in the Bankfin Currie Cup semifinals with a comfortable 64-32 victory over Griquas in Kimberley on Saturday.

Jannes Labuschagne's team showed their class from the opening whistle and totally dominated the first 30 minutes, their 28-3 lead being the fruits of very good ball retention and good support play by the forwards with the backs always looking capable of breaching Griquas defences.

Changing over at 28-11, the Lions promptly added another 14 points in the first six minutes of the second half. But with Griquas appearing to be on a hiding to nothing, they suddenly began to take the games to the Lions, entertaining attack and counter-attack as the home side took their try tally to four, including a penalty try.

The Lions pushed on to a total of nine tries, eight of which Louis Koen (pictured) converted, mainly from in front of the posts.

Lions skipper Labuschagne, who scored two tries, was adjudged the Man of the Match. Griqua flank Solly Tyibilika probably played his best game of the season for the home team.

The Lions came to Kimberley as the out-and-out favourites, and did not disappoint their supporters.

Griquas - Tries: Quinton van Tonder, Jearus Nicholas (2), Penalty Try; Conversions: Van Tonder (3); Penalties: Van Tonder (1), Corrie Avenant (1).

Lions - Tries: Gcobani Bobo, Jannes Labuschagne (2), Russel Winter (2), Wikus van Heerden, Johan Ackermann, Thinus Delport, Delarey du Preez; Conversions: Louis Koen (8); Penaltiy: Koen.
