Ryan in trouble for blasting ref

Bristol coach Dean Ryan is in trouble with the RFU for blasting the referee after last month's Premiership game against London Irish.

The former England international, now in his second season in charge at the Memorial Stadium, has been asked to appear before an RFU disciplinary panel on October 17 in London.

After the Exiles match Ryan claimed stand-in referee Tim Miller cost Bristol the game. "We lost two points because the referee was out of his depth. He had no control of the game.

"I don't understand how anyone who is clearly inadequate for the Premiership can get this appointment. I will get a slap wrist for talking about a referee but nothing will be done about it and this is enough ammunition to hang me."

Ryan will be asked to answer allegations that he infringed International Rugby Board regulations outlawing criticism of referees.

International referee Steve Lander was due to be in charge of the game but pulled out earlier in the day due to flu. Miller, the senior touch judge for the match, deputised.

Ryan will appear before a panel chaired by the chief naval judge advocate Jeff Blackett with Leroy Angel from Hampshire and Surrey's Peter Budge
