Sims ready for Wallaby challenge
October 26, 2001

Worcester lock Dave Sims will skipper the English National Divisions against Australia at Welford Road on Sunday.

The National League selectors have opted for 31-year-old Sims, who won his three England caps on the ill-fated 1998 southern hemisphere tour, to lead a relatively inexperienced team.

"It's the opportunity of a lifetime for most of the players and a good chance for the younger ones to show just how good they are," said Sims.

"We are not just going to be cannon fodder. We have to go out there and do our best."

The match is one of two hastily-arranged friendlies for the Wallabies, who saw their scheduled Test match in Canada because of the players' strike which stopped the North Americans from fielding a full team.

"What the Australians have achieved in recent years is phenomenal and to win two World Cups is quite an achievement but we have got to go out there and play hard and make sure it's not just a training run for them."
