Van den Berg covering for Andrews

Sharks lock Albert van den Berg will join the Springbok squad in Johannesburg on Monday afternoon as back-up to provincial colleague Mark Andrews.

The latter is struggling with a calf strain which forced him to miss the Bankfin Currie Cup semifinal and final.

Van den Berg, a Bok regular in the last two seasons, missed out on selection in the 28-strong squad for the Test matches against France, Italy, England and the United States. Instead, he was included in the SA 'A' squad to tour Europe.

Springbok communications manager Mark Keohane said both Andrews and Van den Berg would travel to Europe with the Boks. "The Bok coaching staff value the contribution Mark (Andrews) can make in the Test matches against France and England and he will be given every opportunity to recover from the calf strain.

"Albert has been drafted in as a back-up should Mark not be fit for the French Test. Harry (Viljoen) made it clear when he announced the Bok and 'A' squads that Albert would always be the first choice lock replacement in the event of injury to one of the Bok locks," said Keohane.

Van den Berg will not be replaced in the 'A' squad, which means that both the Bok and 'A' squads will total 29 players.
