Poutney blow for Scots

Scotland captain Budge Pountney has been ruled out of next month's three-Test series because of a shoulder injury.

The Northampton flanker will miss the Murrayfield matches against Tonga on November 10, Argentina (November 18) and New Zealand (November 24).

Scotland coach Ian McGeechan said: "Budge's left shoulder remains very swollen and he has been advised by the medics to rest to let it settle down.

"This is obviously a blow to us and we wish Budge a speedy recovery."

No decision has yet been taken on who will take the captaincy role in Pountney's absence, although former skipper Bryan Redpath is missing after a hernia operation.

Two other former captains are John Leslie and Andy Nicol. Leslie did the job during an unsuccessful Six Nations campaign but Nicol, who lost his place in the team for recent Test against Ireland, could now come into contention.

Scotland selectors will watch matches this weekend, as well as the forthcoming Scotland Development XV and Scotland A fixtures, before determining whether anyone should be added to the senior squad.
