England v Australia - Preview
November 9, 2001

England go into Saturday's Cook Cup match against world champions Australia at Twickenham with plenty of attention focused on coach Clive Woodward.
The former England and British Lions centre has responded to last month's 20-14 reverse against Ireland - a result that cost his team the Six Nations Grand Slam - by making seven personnel changes and a further two positional switches.

It is the kind of wholesale makeover that could lead to Woodward either being branded an irresponsible gambler or a tactical genius depending on the scoreline come the final whistle.

This is a point not lost on Australia coach Eddie Jones who did his best to add the pressure on his opposite number Thursday by saying: "I think England are under pressure to perform and the side Clive has named suggests that."

Woodward has dropped five members of his Dublin pack while behind the scrum there is no place for Bath fullback Iain Balshaw. His place is taken by Jason Robinson who moves from the wing to take the No 15 15 shirt, while injured scrumhalf Matt Dawson's spot is taken by Kyran Bracken (pictured) with Austin Healey filling Robinson's place on the wing.

Jones believes Robinson, a former Great Britain rugby league ace, will face a tough time in his new role. "He certainly has all the running skills. The only thing you would question is whether or not Jason has the tactical nous to play fullback at international level."

Regular captain Martin Johnson is still out with the hand injury that forced him to miss the Dublin match and his Leicester team-mate, flanker Neil Back, will lead the side out. England have a brand new front row of Graham Rowntree, Dorian West and Phil Vickery replacing veteran Jason Leonard, Phil Greening and Julian White respectively.

In the second row, Leicester lock Ben Kay takes the place of Simon Shaw. Richard Hill, England's No 8 in Dublin, moves back to blindside flanker, with Martin Corry dropped. Joe Worsley becomes England's new No 8 in the continuing absence of Wasps team-mate Lawrence Dallaglio, who is still battling to overcome a cruciate ligament injury.

Former England prop Jeff Probyn told AFP Thursday: "It is a testing time for England. It's a very young side, especially in the forwards, with no outstanding power players. That means it should be a very fast and open game. But it's one Clive Woodward's got to win and get the team back on track after losing out on a Grand Slam for the third year in a row.

"He can't afford for his team to be short of confidence when they play South Africa in two weeks time," said Probyn. "But Australia are also rebuilding. They don't have John Eales (retired captain and lock) any longer," Probyn added.

Meanwhile, Jones had the luxury of naming a side unchanged from the one that thrashed Spain by a record 92-10 last week. "We were very happy with our execution in the Test against the Spanish and, as it stands at the moment, this is our best side," said Jones.

England won last season's Cook Cup clash 22-19 thanks to an extra-time try from Dan Luger. And adding further spice this time round will be the sight of Healey again confronting Australia lock Justin Harrison.

The 'Leicester Lip', as Healey is known, labelled Harrison "an ape and a plank" during the Lions recent 2-1 series defeat down under.

"We've got to be direct," said Healey's Leicester colleague Back, talking about the onfield approach. "Everyone's job is first to win possession and keep hold of it. Last year we had 60 percent of the possession and territory. If we can do that again the result will go our way."
