Woodward acused of gloating
November 11, 2001

England rugby coach Clive Woodward has been condemend for 'gloating' by the Australian press following England's 21-15 victory over the world champs at Twickenham.

Woodward labelled Australia's style of play as a boring, predictable kicking game featuring loads of penalties and said the try scored by Wallaby fullback Matthew Burke had been aided by illegal decoy running.

"Showing scant regard for grace in victory, Woodward gloated over Saturday's 21-15 scoreline and preached from his post-match pulpit how the Devils from Down Under had finally received the comeuppance they deserved," The Australian said.

"It was eye-for-eye stuff after Wallaby coach Eddie Jones had needled his rival throughout the Test build-up."

The Australian quoted Jones as saying: "I think Clive made a statement that he was above all of that sort of stuff. But obviously he's not."

The Sydney Morning Herald commented: "The England back row outplayed their Australian counterparts. England are a very good team. Pity about their coach."
