Leeds ladies may play in underwear
November 13, 2001

The Leeds University women's rugby team have been devastated by the loss of their uniforms, and may now meet rivals Ripon and York St John in their underwear.

The team lost its jerseys and shorts when thieves stole a kitbag from a Peugeot belonging to Caroline Bell, one of the players, and are now considering running out in their sports bras and cycling shorts.

Bell's vehicle was parked outside her home in Headingly, Leeds, and she left the bag in the car because it was too bulky to lug up to her third floor flat.

"I think the thieves thought Christmas must have come early when they saw the large bag on my back seat," she said. "They must have been terribly disappointed when they opened it only to find the rugby shirts and shorts. Fortunately for them the kit had just been washed at the weekend."

"If they don't receive the kit before tomorrow 2pm, when they play Ripon and York St John at home, the girls may have to resort to playing in nothing but their sturdy sports bras and cycling shorts," a team spokeswoman said.
