Sarries look to give Romania a boost
November 14, 2001

Zurich Premiership side Saracens have nominated their game against Newcastle on December 9 as SOS Romania Day.

Fans, schools and clubs are invited to donate rugby kit to help to rejuvenate the sport in Romania, whose team, before the 1989 revolution, was an emerging force in the European game. They beat Wales 24-6 in 1983 and lost only 14-6 to New Zealand in 1981.

"Rugby in Romania needs help. There is talent there, but without assistance it will never be realised," Robin Bye, the Saracens media director, said. Desperately needed are: boots (sizes UK 4-12), shirts, shorts and socks (especially for 15 to 18-year-olds and team sets if possible), training shoes, tackle bags, shoulder pads, head and body protectors and rugby balls. Every child bringing kit will be allowed in to the match free.
