Back demands England nail the basics
November 14, 2001

England skipper Neil Back has prioritised getting the basics 100% perfect in what is expected to be a one-sided clash with Romaniaat Twickenham on Saturday.

"I want us to be ruthless," said stand-in captain Back. "There will be no letting up for the whole 80 minutes."

"They (the fans) will expect a big score but what I expect is the defence to be spot on," he said.

"I have told the team that I expect to concede no tries. I was disappointed to leak two tries against Australia," he said.

Back insists that England's preparation for Saturday's match has been as thorough and intense as it was for the tremendous victory over the Wallabies.

Back explained: "These games are almost more difficult. It's important we keep our shape and direction and don't become too lateral too early.

"What we will try and do is be 100% perfect with the basics. Much of the work will be like last Saturday - direct, confrontational and aimed at getting across the game line."

England have made nine changes to test the strength of their squad, most noticeably handing Sale fly-half Charlie Hodgson, 21 on Monday, his first cap after they exorcised the demons of defeat by Ireland in the Six Nations championship decider held over from last season.

"Ireland was very painful. We got it wrong," admitted Back. "A number of people have put their hands up and I have to be included in that but we have learned and moved forward.

"Last week the preparation was just as intense but the content was slightly different.

"Now we have to concentrate on Romania because there are 15, possibly 22 players, who want to put their marker down on the world stage."

Back will use his roundly-praised man management skills when he has a special word with new boy Hodgson.

"Charlie getting his first cap, it is important we all play well for him. I will just be asking him to do what he does well at club level, to be vocal, play well and lead, that is what you need from a No 10. It's a great opportunity for him," he said.

"We will be looking to play this week in preparation for next against one of the world's greatest rugby teams. But I will be asking for the same level of application and desire the players have shown in training and want them to be direct before we get our back line into the game in one-on-one situations," said Back.

His captaincy against Australia has been widely praised but Back is under no illusion that he is only filling in until injured skipper Martin Johnson returns - and that could be against South Africa.

"If he is fit and well and plays for Leicester this week then he will be back captaining England.

"I will just do the best I can while I have the job. It's up to Clive Woodward and the management to decide the captaincy. Other people make the decisions and I just do the best I can," added Back.
