England v South Africa - Preview
November 23, 2001

South Africa will be looking for revenge and a chance to restore their reputation when they face England here at Twickenham on Saturday.

Their tour of Europe has not been the triumphal progress usually associated with Springbok tours of the northern hemisphere, a 20-10 defeat against France earlier this month followed by a flattering 54-26 win over Italy.

Meanwhile England, who beat them 25-17 here last year, find themselves in the historically unusual position of favourites - a status enhanced by their 21-15 Twickenham victory over world champions Australia this month and showed they had strength in depth when a younger team trounced Romania 134-0 last Saturday.

But South Africa wing Breyton Paulse (pictured) is looking forward to the match and his individual duel with opposing flyer Dan Luger.

"It is going to be a tough game against Dan who had a good match against Australia and I know from last year that I will have to concentrate on my own game very hard," said the 25-year-old Paulse.

"We made mistakes in our first game against France, we lost ball against them, we made silly mistakes, we gave away a lot of penalties and we threw away points.

"We knew we had to improve against Italy and did a lot of work for that game. Twickenham is a special ground for South African teams because we know that we will have so many supporters there.

"It is always a wonderful occasion for both teams, that's why it is so physical. I remember last year, blood everywhere, and for the forwards it was very physical. But there is going to be respect on both sides."

His words were echoed by South Africa captain and No 8 Bobby Skinstad. "England are the in-form team. They have been for the past 18 months. This said we certainly haven't come here for the weather. We know our ability.

"In 1999 at the World Cup we were given little chance of beating England. I don't take much notice of pre-match predictions. They count for nothing. It comes down to 80 minutes on the day," said Skinstad, remembering the Springboks 44-21 quarter-final victory in Paris.

South Africa have recalled veteran lock Mark Andrews with AJ Venter moving to flanker. For the first time during his tenure as South Africa coach Harry Viljoen has resisted the temptation to alter his back division which he admits he is less satisfied with than the scrum.

Meanwhile England make only one change to the side that beat Australia, captain Martin Johnson back in the second row following a broken hand. His value to England should not be underestimated.

The British Lions captain is more than a commanding presence at the lineout but an inspirational rallying point and also a clear-headed decision maker. "I feel for Ben (Kay, Johnson's stand-in) because he hasn't put a foot wrong," said England vice-captain and Johnson's Leicester team-mate Neil Back.

"But with Jonno's experience, winning nature and proven track record it's right he's (Johnson)coming back into the team," the flanker added. "He simply gives the players around him a bit of extra confidence."

England have never recorded three straight wins against South Africa. This is surely their best chance. But under-estimating the opposition, as England did against Ireland, is never wise and a wounded Springbok could yet prove to be a dangerous beast.
