BBC decision on Rugby Special iminent
December 7, 2001

A decision on the possible return of the much missed BBC's Rugby Special is expected to be taken before Christmas.

The Times reports that the debate continues within BBC Sport as to when Rugby Special, last aired four years ago, will return to our screens.

Presented by John Inverdale clad in his famous rugby shirts the show disappeared from our screens when BSkyB won the rights for the domestic game in England as part of its Six Nations contract for home international matches at Twickenham.

BBC chiefs are looking at various ideas should the programme be re-born, whether to bring it back in its old Sunday teatime slot, if that is feasible and, if not, when to schedule it.

Several options are under review -- whether it should be highlights driven or have more of a magazine and news edge. The think-tank hopes to have a decision by Christmas. It will certainly have an audience who have missed the regular weekly round-up that the programme provided. In 1997, up to 1.8 million devoted viewers tuned in.
