Davies insists desire gave Tykes the edge
December 9, 2001

Leeds Tykes coach Phil Davies put Sunday's 23-18 victory over Harlequins down to the "desire and passion" of his players.

Starting the day bottom of the Zurich Premiership, Leeds were inspired by wing Dan Scarborough, whose try-scoring performance stole the headlines from South African debutant Braam van Straaten.

After beating a weakened Leicester side last month, Leeds conceded 169 points in three heavy defeats - to Wasps, Sale and Gloucester - but two 80-yard scores from Scarborough and 13 points from Van Straaten ended their woeful run.

"We have had three tough games against good sides and things haven't really gone our way but today we made sure they did," said Davies.

"From one to 15, the desire and commitment to play for ourselves today was enormous and that was required.

"I think today we deserve some credit for the way we performed and gave our supporters something to shout for."

Davies added that the arrival of Van Straaten, signed from Western Province, had been just the fillip his ailing side needed.

"He gave us a lift in the week," Davies added.

He added: I've always said I want a team full of stars and that's what we produced today. It was a good team performance that everyone at the club and here in Yorkshire can be proud of."

Davies' Harlequins counterpart John Kingston was scathing of his side's performance, describing their approach as "naive".

In defeat Harlequins became the latest in a high-profile list of sides to have lost at Headingley, following in the wake of Leicester, Saracens and Bath.

"There is a danger when you go into games like this that you treat them differently because you are against a side whose expectations are slightly different," he said.

"There's a feeling of are Leeds a Premiership club or are they in the division like Rotherham were last year?

"We certainly did not deal with what was put in front of us today, we made too many unforced errors and Leeds capitalised on the errors.

"We twice spilled the ball yards from their line which cost us 14 points in the game.

"We put together some good passages of play but could not finish anything. We showed a lack of control and drive."
