Macqueen calls for global season
December 10, 2001

Former Wallaby coach Rod Macqueen has pleaded with world rugby authorities to adhere to a call for a global season, saying the players are not able to cope with the amount of rugby being played these days.

Macqueen, who retired after leading Australia to a series win over the British Lions and leaving the game as the most successful coach ever, said the taxing season is having a negative effect on the players, who have become more prone to injuries and burnout.

"It's obvious we've got to have a global competition," he told Reuters. "It's got nothing to do with the amount of games they (players) are playing.

"You can't train as much as they do and only have four weeks off. The human body just can't endure that."
