120th Varsity Match preview
December 10, 2001

Oxford will be looking to complete their first hat-trick of successive Varsity victories for thirty years when they take on Cambridge tomorrow in their 120th meeting.

The two sides will be competing for new silverware in the shape of the MMC Trophy, and more than 50,000 people will flock to English rugby union headquarters for the clash.

Oxford's director of rugby Steve Hill believes his side's trump card is the experience they have and this is eveident with three internationals packing down for them tomorrow - props Kevin Tkachuk (Canada) and Ray Lehner (USA), and captain Brett Robinson (Australia). In comparison, Cambridge can call on the services of one Test player, Italian Marco Rivaro, who lines up in the centre.

Hill summoned specialist backs and scrummaging coaches during the build-up - Leicester's Australian centre Rod Kafer among those giving a helping hand - underlining his attention to detail.

"We have tailored everything to give the best possible performance," Hill said.

"This is a squad that has got used to winning, and we must make that count. We have to make our experience pay on the day.

"But we are under no illusions, as we recognise it's the strongest Cambridge side for a number of years. It is going to be a very tough test."

Not since 1971 have Oxford completed a Twickenham treble, their unexpected win two years ago ending Cambridge dominance that saw Tony Rodgers' Light Blues lift the Bowring Bowl on a record-equalling five successive occasions.

Oxford also have nine Blues in their starting XV, while Cambridge have six, the list featuring 1999 try-scoring hero Luke Sherriff, who has been switched from flanker to centre, and goalkicking fly-half Seb FitzGerald.

Oxford field 13 of the starting line-up that gave Australia a thorough examination six weeks ago - Cambridge will be wary of wing Will Rubie's searing pace after he outpaced Ben Tune and scored a 90-metre interception try against the Wallabies - yet the Light Blues also possess potential match-winners.

Cambridge fly-half Sam Howard boasts Premiership experience with Bedford, former skipper Angus Innes will spearhead the front-five forward effort, while New Zealand flanker Duncan Blaikie has played Super 12 rugby.

Blaikie, previously on the books of Otago Highlanders and Waikato Chiefs, has just recovered from a broken hand, only having his plaster cast removed last Tuesday. Number eight Mike Count, who won his first Blue two years ago, is charged with captaincy duties.
