Cardey hit with injury blow

Llanelli and Wales full-back Matt Cardey suffered a major injury blow after an accident during training on Tuesday.

Cardey badly damaged his ankle and is expected to undergo emergency surgery this evening. The full extent of the injury will be known on Wednesday.

"This is obviously a major blow for Matt," said director of rugby Gareth Jenkins. "We are hugely disappointed for him as much as anything else. He has been going great guns so far this season.

"We have been able to use him at both centre and full-back and he has responded with some big performances in some big games for us."

The New Zealand-born Cardey scored a Heineken Cup record-equalling five tries in a match against Calvisano in the Scarlets' recent 93-14 victory.

He gained his one international cap in Wales' victory over Scotland in the 2000 Lloyds TSB Six Nations campaign.
