Leicester must wait for world title tilt
December 13, 2001

All-conquering Leicester have had their hopes of a world club championship showdown with ACT Brumbies dashed because of fixture congestion.

And they have called on rugby governing bodies in the northern and southern hemispheres to clear the way for such a fixture next season.

The Zurich Premiership champions and Heinken Cup holders had hoped to tackle the Super 12 title holders at Welford Road later this season, but have had to give up on the idea because there simply wasn't an available date to play.

"We would have loved to have played in a game against the Brumbies in front of a capacity 17,000 crowd but this year it was not to be," said Leicester chairman Peter Tom.

"The staging of a world club championship game between the two top teams in the northern and southern hemispheres is a natural progression and development of club rugby. It would capture the imagination and interest of rugby fans around the world."

Of course, Leicester shouldn't take it for granted that they will be in the showdown next year. This season's title isnt in the bag yet.
