Kiwis agree new pay structure
December 14, 2001

New Zealand's professional rugby players have agreed on a new three-year contract which specifies their rates of pay and working conditions.

However, the players will not receive a share of sponsorship or television revenue.

Rob Nichol, chairman of the trade union which represents professional players, the Rugby Union Players Association, said New Zealand rugby could not yet afford to cut players in on lucrative TV deals.

The contract, effective for three years from January 1, stipulates minimum rates of pay. All Blacks will receive a minimum of NZ$85 000, Super 12 players NZ$65 000 and Sevens players a retainer of NZ$20 000 New Zealand and NZ$1 800 per tournament.

New Zealand has the world's highest-paid rugby player, winger Jonah Lomu, whose worth was recently estimated at NZ$6 million.
