Scarlets full of confidence for Perpignan clash
January 2, 2002

Welsh/Scottish League leaders Llanelli are full of confidence going into their latest Heineken CUp clash with Perpignan on Friday night.

Coach Gareth Jenkins says his side are relishing the challenge facing them in the south of France.

Jenkins told the Western Mail, "We have proved we have more than one particular style of game we can play. We have lots of things we can use and take into a game that has to be a positive. We are not a one-dimensional team by any means.

"Perpignan are on form - they are top of their section of the French championship and I am comfortable with the fact that we are travelling there having won this game at Bridgend.

"If not we would have been heading to Perpignan with two games down the shoot and confidence low. It would not have been the way to go to France, but now we have a lot of things to hold on to and build upon.

"I think our pack were very good at Bridgend, but Martyn Madden and Salesi Finau gave us direction on the gain-line and everyone else was totally supportive and committed to following those two catalysts.

"But what a way to start a game. We lost on Boxing Day and at Bridgend were 20 points down in 10 minutes or so. To see the body language at that point was concerning - we wanted to start a lot better than that.

"But we always realised we would have to play a very forward-orientated game at Bridgend. We started to put our focus and direction together - we realised we had to play that way against them.

"It's disappointing that lately we have not been starting games well. We seem to take half-an-hour to warm up in games, but Bridgend are not a bad team and to go 20 points down and come back into a game having had a lot of confidence dented by Swansea - that answered a lot of questions and said a lot of things about us as a team.

"It was testament to the organ-isation of our forward game to have kept the ball out of Bridgend's hands for 30 of the last 40 minutes. We held the ball and took their scrum and line-out off them รป it was a big testament to the focus and quality of the pack, which makes our performance at Swansea even harder to explain.

"Bridgend are capable - they have backs as good as any and we did not want them to win enough ball and play with the tempo at which they started the game."
