Italy give green light to foreign players
January 7, 2002

The Italian Rugby Federation (FIR) on Friday approved a rule change that would make non-Italian passport holders available for the national side.

Under the rule, which must be rubber stamped by the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) before it comes into force, a player can become eligible for Italy after living in the country for 36 months and on condition that he has not previously played for his country of origin.

Italy coach Brad Johnstone - a New Zealander - has said he will take advantage of the new rule but he will only be allowed to pick one such `foreigner` for each team.
