Llanelli put price on euro failure
January 8, 2002

Llanelli believe they will miss out on a £250,000 windfall income if they do not beat current holder Leicester Tigers this Saturday and progress to the Heineken Cup quarter-finals.

The Scarlets also believe it is imperative that at least one Welsh club reaches the quarter-final stage to ensure a maximum Welsh contingent in the tournament next year.

Only Cardiff and Llanelli can reach the quarter-finals. Cardiff travel to Northampton, the 2000 cup winners.

"When we reached the Heineken semi-finals in 2000, the club revenue was up by £500,000," Stuart Gallacher, the Llanelli chief executive said. "It's the opportunity for merit money and for more and bigger gates. But it's also vital for Welsh rugby to fill the fifth slot available to us next season and, to do that, we need a quarter-finalist." Llanelli, of course, are one of the six clubs seeking pre-eminence in Wales, where the domestic structure is the subject of a forthcoming report.

Gallacher is confident of a sell-out crowd of 10,800 on Saturday, with Leicester expected to bring more than 3,500 supporters with them to a ground where they have won no more than three games.
