Brisbane Sevens draw
January 16, 2002

The Wallaby 7s team faces a semi final showdown with Fiji if all goes to plan, following the release today of the draw for the Brisbane World Rugby Sevens at Ballymore on February 2 & 3.

Tournament leaders New Zealand head a tough Pool A featuring Samoa, France and Japan, while Fiji will be tested by Argentina in Pool B, which also includes China and the Cook Islands.

Heading Pool C, Australia has drawn Wales, USA and Papua New Guinea, which puts them on course for a quarter final clash with England, given current form in the Series.

If Australia can win through to the semi finals, a showdown with Fiji looms, in a replay of the final of the 2000 Brisbane tournament, which Fiji won in the dying seconds, thanks to a brilliant try to Waisale Serevi.

New Zealand look favoured to win through to the Final, providing they can fend off the likely challenge from an improving Argentina. Argentina, England and South Africa have been the big improvers in this year's IRB World Sevens Series, challenging the likes of New Zealand, Fiji and Australia.

Australian Coach Julian Gardner is philosophical about facing Fiji in the semi finals. He told the ARU's official website, "To win this tournament you have to beat Fiji and New Zealand - it's as simple as that. Fiji have the brilliant Serevi and also are likely to field Villiame Delasau who is one of the most exciting Sevens players in the world."

"But we have a great blend of Sevens experience, Super 12 experience and two former Kangaroos in Sailor and Rogers. It's a matter of blending that talent together over the two days."

Pool A: New Zealand, Samoa, France, Japan
Pool B: Fiji, Argentina, Cook Islands, China
Pool C: Australia, Wales, USA, PNG
Pool D: South Africa, England, Canada, Tonga
