Newlands retains its heritage

Western Province's home ground will officially be known as Newlands again and not the cumbersome Investec Newlands.

In line with Investec's sponsorship of the Stormers, the specialist banking group and Western Province Rugby announced on Friday the decision to simply call the stadium 'Newlands', said Raymond van Niekerk, global head of group marketing at Investec.

"We elected to change the name of the stadium to reflect its popular name rather than calling it Investec Newlands," he said.

"Instead, Investec will limit the branding of the home of the Stormers/WP to using visual tools, namely type face and the Investec logo."

This follows the announcement last year that Investec would take over the sponsorship of the Stormers. The sponsorship, which will run for four years, resulted from Investec's acquisition earlier this year of former sponsor Fedsure.

"We've tried to adopt a unique approach to stadium naming and branding," Van Niekerk said. "While the rich history, heritage and tradition of Newlands is retained, the commercial value inherent in the modern trend of selling stadium naming rights is preserved through the use of the Investec logo and typeface."

Rob Wagner, MD of the WP Rugby, commented: "Stadium naming rights sales have become lucrative and important elements of any sporting body's income streams. We are very happy with the way Investec has opted to utilise their naming rights." - Sapa
