RFU will consider other Powergen semi-final venues
January 21, 2002

English rugby chiefs have maintained that Reading's Madejski Stadium remains their "preferred venue" for this season's Powergen Cup semi-finals but they will be considering other options.

The Rugby Football Union say they will consider other options, depending on the outcome of Tuesday's semi-final draw.

Controversy has arisen after London Irish - who play their home games at the Madejski Stadium - booked a semi-final place by beating Gloucester 25-10 yesterday.

Irish will be joined in the last four by cup holders Newcastle, Harlequins and Northampton for planned back-to-back games on March 9.

But Newcastle boss Rob Andrew has already indicated that he will request a change of venue if the Falcons are paired with Irish, given the obvious advantage the Exiles would gain.

"Although the Madejski Stadium remains our preferred venue, as the semi-finals were such a huge success there two years ago, other options will be considered depending on the outcome of the draw, including home ties for the sides drawn out of the hat first," said RFU community rugby and operations director Terry Burwell.

"The matter will be given priority by the England Rugby Limited board and the RFU competitions sub-committee.

"We would expect to make an announcement of the venue(s) shortly after the draw has been completed."
