Bok coach selection procedure outlined
January 25, 2002

The SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd. Board, after discussions on Friday, has decided on a procedure to be followed in appointing the new Springbok coach.

Viljoen resigned the post on January 18th, citing media pressure as the primary reason.

SA Rugby's Managing Director Rian Oberholzer (pictured) said the board felt it necessary to explore every available avenue to ensure that the right appointment was made.

The agreed upon selection procedure is as follows:

·The SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd board has mandated its Executive Committee to undertake the duties of a selection panel;

·The position will be advertised;

·Only South African nationals will be eligible to apply;

·Recognised Human resources recruitment procedures will be followed, which include a full interview process;

·The process involves wide consultation with key stakeholders, including the players' union and ex-Springboks;

·Upon selection of the possible candidate, the executive will make its recommendation to the SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd board;

·The final decision which is due in the first week of March 2002, will be made by the SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd. Board.

"We had to think rationally, be calm in our approach and consider all the positives and negatives of making an immediate appointment. Similarly, we had to look at the benefits of not rushing anything. The board trusted the latter approach," said Oberholzer.
