SoCal big guns fire again

The big guns fired again in week two action of the 2002 Southern California
league championship.

Belmont Shore scored the biggest win of the round by taking the sword to
Riverside 68-3. Belmont scored ten tries on the day in racking up the
biggest winning margin of the season to date.

Fullback Ruan Walters had an outstanding day with the boot, converting nine
of his ten shots at posts, while the star of the game for Belmont Shore was
prop Fili Lameta who scored three tries.

Belmont's forward pack laid the platform for the victory. Their support play
and passing in general was excellent and they recycled the ball through
multiple phases all day. On the other side of the ball, Riverside's tackling
was below par, although the team played valiantly despite the heavy loss.

The other powerhouse club, OMBAC of San Diego, travelled north to Orange
County to take on the Huntington Beach Unicorns and went home with a 29-14
victory.

OMBAC, fielding many of its Super League players, scored five tries to two.

Unicorns' Football Manager Ray Viers said Samoan-born prop Henry Bloomfield
was one player who stood out in a losing side. "Our forwards played well and
took it to OMBAC, particularly in the second half. They tried hard, played
very well and did a great job, even though we lost."

In the final match of the round, the Back Bay Sharks of Newport Beach took
on Santa Monica in a game the Sharks needed to win, however, Santa Monica
prevailed 19-13 in a close fought tussle.

Back Bay spokesperson Ed Burlingham said obviously it was a disappointing
result given that the club had high expectations going into the season, "We
had some major injury problems, mainly in the front row and we had some
trouble with our lineouts too.

"The set pieces were where we certainly had difficulty because we're lacking
experience in the forward pack. The few times we got the ball out to the
backs we did okay and scored a couple of good tries, but Santa Monica pushed
us around in the scrum and deserve credit for their win."

After two weeks of the new SCRFU season Belmont Shore, OMBAC and Santa
Monica lead the way all at 2-0.
