Sharks leave it late
January 28, 2002
Rudolf Straeuli's Sharks left it late before finally seeing off a spirited Renegades side 24-17 in their warm-up clash in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday. The Renegades, a team made up of players who didn't make the four Super 12 squads, showed great counter-attacking play as they kept their distinguished hosts scoreless for almost an hour. Coach Tim Lane would have been particularly impressed by the performances of former Stormers No 8 Chean Roux, who scored two tries, and Falcons winger Wynand Lourens. However, it must be said the Sharks fielded a well-below strength line-up, with Straeuli opting to rest big names like Mark Andrews and Trevor Halstead. Thinus Delport showed some good touches in his first outing for the Durban-based team, scoring the third try as they came from behind to clinch the win. Scorers: Sharks - Tries: Chad Alcock, Brad Macleod-Henderson, Thinus Delport, Stephen Brink; Conversions: Gaffie du Toit, Thinus Delport. Renegades - Tries: Wynand Lourens, Chean Roux (2); Conversion: Monwabisi Mdeshya. |
