Howley set for new record
January 30, 2002

Cardiff's Rob Howley is set to pass another milestone when he steps onto the field in Dublin on Sunday for Wales' opening Six Nations Championship clash with Ireland.

Howley, 31, will become Wales's most capped scrum half when he wears the red short of Wales for the 55th time, surpassing Robert Jones's record.

"It would be a lie to say that it had not been a target ever since I won the fiftieth cap," Howley told The Times. "To have surpassed Gareth Edwards and now Robert Jones is something special. So many people have helped me down the years, Terry Holmes, and Gareth and Robert themselves."

The record caps a remarkable turnaround in fortunes for Howley who in 2000 lost the captaincy of his country and then his place in the side.

Howley, who along with Scott Quinnell provides the much needed experience in a young squad admitted, "There is a freshness in the squad, and the youngsters keep you on your toes," Howley said.

"It is a period of transition, but there is no reason why we cannot have a good season. If we can get off to a good start, we have three home games and a visit to Twickenham. I would back our chances at the Millennium Stadium."
